The DC All-Stars are heading west to kick off their 2012 WFTDA season with three bouts against West Coast teams. DC is the only East Coast team to be represented at The Big O, an invitational roller derby tournament hosted by the Emerald City Roller Girl in Eugene, Oregon, Feb. 10-12.
“We don’t get many opportunities to play West Coast teams, so we are very excited to be participating in this tournament,” DC All-Stars Captain Soledad said. “There is a big east-west rivalry within WFTDA roller derby, so we want to come away with three wins and show the west who’s the best!”
The DC All-Stars, currently ranked #11 in the WFTDA East Region, will first take on the Santa Cruz Derby Girls, ranked #15 in the West Region, at 10 am Saturday, Feb. 10. That evening, the All-Stars will play hosts Emerald City (#12 West) in the main event bout. Sunday at 1 pm, DC will cap off the weekend with a match-up against the Silicon Valley Roller Girls (#14 West).
“We narrowly missed qualifying for the 2011 WFTDA Playoffs, so our team’s goal for 2012 is to advance in the rankings to qualify for the 2012 Playoffs this fall,” All-Stars Co-Captain Lois Slain said. “We want to start the season off on the right foot by giving it our all at the Big O!”
Getting to the Big O is a big investment for the All-Stars team. It will cost at least $10,000 for airfare, hotel and rental cars. Help the All-Stars meet their 2012 fund-raising goals with a tax-deductible donation in honor of your favorite All-Star!
